IPL 2024: Shubman Gill Reflects on His IPL Success, 'Being an Impact Player Adds Value'

Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Shubman Gill admitted that the impact player has little role to play in making matches high-scoring as it gives the batsmen an extra chance to go hard on the bowlers after being bowled out by just four runs. for Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday.

It was his 12th 200-plus score of the ongoing IPL season as Delhi Capitals piled on 224/4 and Gujarat Titans could only manage 220/8 in reply.

“I think the impact player has a bit of a role (in making matches high scoring), even if you lose extra wickets, the batsmen have an extra cushion to keep going and it gives the batsmen the license to carry on into 2017. End,” Gill said after GT's four-run loss. Despite a strong start, the GT bowlers allowed DC to make a comeback as Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel put on a 113-run stand and Gill felt his side were guilty of giving away a few extra runs. “At one stage we thought we could restrict them to around 200-210. We gave away a few extra runs in the last two overs,” Gill said. “But the good thing about chasing is that you know what you're chasing. It's a small field, and it's chaseable. Execution becomes very important [for bowlers]. If there's nothing in the wicket for the bowlers, you have to execute your plans - or your yorkers."

Shubman Gill also said it was disappointing to lose such a close game.

“I think we played really good cricket, disappointing to lose at the end, but great character shown by everyone. Great fight till the end and we never thought we would be out of the game at any point," said the GT skipper. "When you are chasing 224, there is no point talking about plans, just go out and make runs," He added.
